DESIGN & CULTURE / A STUDIO NOTE
Design startswith paying attention.
On looking beyond the screen, learning from our city and giving useful ideas a point of view.

Look before you make
Design often begins with a screen. A blank frame, a new file, a moodboard. But the work gets more interesting when we begin a little earlier: with the people, places and habits the design will eventually meet.
A city is a living reference library
In Lagos, attention is a useful creative habit. A hand-painted sign can tell you how someone wants to be understood. A shopfront can reveal the difference between looking impressive and being easy to find. A conversation can show you the words people actually use, rather than the ones in the brief.
These details are not decoration to borrow. They are clues. They help us understand context, recognise familiar patterns and notice what a brand or product might need to do differently.
People before the presentation
A beautiful presentation can make almost any idea feel convincing for a moment. Everyday use is a harder test. Can someone understand it quickly? Does it help them do what they came to do? Does the voice feel like it belongs to the person or business behind it?
The answers come from paying attention to the people on the other side of the design. Listening, observing and asking clear questions give the creative work something solid to stand on.
Make room for character
Usefulness does not have to look anonymous. A brand can be clear and surprising. An app can be efficient and warm. A website can help someone find what they need while giving them a reason to remember it.
Character grows from decisions that belong together: the words, the rhythm, the images and the small interactions. It is the difference between applying a style and building a point of view.
Carry the observation into the work
Keep the detail that changed how you understood the brief. Bring it into the next conversation. Test it against the people who will use the result.
The best design references are sometimes already around us. We just have to look long enough to see them.
The world isa good place to start.
